چکیده
The objective of this study was to determine the density and habitat preference of the Black-andrufous elephant-shrew (Rhynchocyon petersi) in Chome Forest Reserve, Tanzania. Chome Forest (143km2) is located in the South Pare Mountains and provides critical habitat for endangered R. petersi. Twelve 300m transects were cut through the centre of the forest in an east-west direction and the number of elephant-shrew nests within 2.5 meters on each side of the transects was recorded. The mean number of nests per 100m transect (0.39 ± 0.47 [1SE]) translated to a density estimate of 19 elephant-shrews per km2 (SE=23). Nest sites tended to be found in areas with greater than expected cover at the low (<5m) levels. These results indicate the population density of R. petersi is lower in the Chome Forest Reserve than in most populations in the Eastern Arc Mountains. The reasons for this difference and the conservation implications are discussed.

Evolutionary History of the Grey-Faced Sengi, Rhynchocyon udzungwensis, from Tanzania: A Molecular and Species Distribution Modelling Approach
Rhynchocyon udzungwensis is a recently described and poorly understood sengi (giant elephant-shrew) endemic to two small montane forests in Southern Tanzania, and surrounded in lower forests by R. cirnei reichardi. In this study, we investigate the molecular genetic relationship between R. udzungwensis and R. c. reichardi, and the possible role that shifting species distributions in response to...

Density and diversity of birds in two different forest zones, namely, Shasta Kalateh Protected Forest and Alangdareh Recreational Forest, were estimated and compared. Birds and environmental variables were recorded within 25 m radius in 100 sampling points. The first axis of Canonical Component Analysis segregated two main groups of birds. The first group consisted of Black Woodpecker, Great Sp...

Large scale land use/cover changes and habitat fragmentation have been associated with the decline of many wildlife populations in ecological sensitive regions. The main goal of this study was to quantify the spatial pattern changes in Caucasian Black Grouse habitat in Arasbaran Biosphere Reserve, Northwest of Iran in a period of 24 years (1987–2011). Caucasian black grouse (Tetrao mlokosiewicz...
متن کاملThe oestrous cycle of the rufous elephant-shrew, Elephantulus rufescens.
Elephantulus rufescens is one of 15 species of elephant-shrews (F. Macroscelididae), a specialized group of mammals confined to the continent of Africa (see Rathbun, 1979, for review). Since elephant-shrews have only recently been successfully bred in captivity (Rathbun, Beaman & Maliniak, 1981), information on their reproduction has largely been obtained from examination of the reproductive or...
